What is Circumcision?
Circumcision is a minor surgical procedure in which the foreskin—the skin covering the head of the penis—is removed. It is often performed on newborns for religious, cultural, medical, or hygienic reasons. In some cultures and religions circumcision is a tradition. In other cases, it is done for medical reasons. Circumcision is generally a quick procedure and can be done with local anaesthesia. Parents need to consult with a healthcare professional to understand the risks, benefits, and the right timing for the procedure based on their child's health and the family's preferences.
Why Do Parents Choose Circumcision?
Religious & Cultural Reasons:
Islam: Considered a Sunnah (commendable act), often performed in early childhood.
Judaism: A religious ritual called Brit Milah, performed on the 8th day after birth.
African & Pacific Cultures: A rite of passage in some traditions.
Medical Reasons:
Reduces the risk of infections.
Prevents conditions like phimosis (inability to retract the foreskin).
Hygiene Considerations:
Some parents believe circumcision makes hygiene easier, though proper cleaning can prevent issues even with an intact foreskin.
